This was one of my favorite mission trips. We were visiting some children in Haiti and in this photo I had the joy of reading them a book that a Haitian friend had helped me translate into Creole. I was hoping to give them gifts that make an impact. It’s a favorite book called The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. None of these kids spoke English and I didn’t speak Creole, but there was a precious moment of two very different worlds coming together to share a love of learning and to just share some love, two things that are the same in all the world.
A few of you know that although Share the Soap is only 1 year old TODAY we have been making goat milk soap for over 13 years. Some of you have been with us since that beginning batch! From a few years after we started making soap up until about 4 years ago, we had been selling soap privately as well as in a few local retail locations under our farm name, Higher Calling Farm. About 4 years ago we closed the business as we felt God calling us to move internationally. After preparing for a couple years it was made very clear to us that we were to stay where we are for the time being anyway. It had been a couple years since we had been making soap and the “soap bug” was creeping in again (not to mention friends and family asking for soap again–you know who you encouragers are :))
With a love for learning and a love for sharing, we decided we wanted to start up the soap business again, but this time with a different focus. We wanted to create gifts that make an impact. What if we could somehow run it with a focus on sharing? What if it was a business that would somehow give back to the community while people were purchasing items they use every day anyway? Hence the idea for Share the Soap was born! Although we are still trying to learn many aspects of this new business and although we are quite small, we are thankful for the ways we have been blessed and have seen blessings spread over just this meager first year.
At least 10% of the proceeds from all sales goes back into the community. So every time you use our soap (hopefully everyday, lol), or every time you buy our soap as a gift for a friend or family member, even though it is an every day item for yourself or a gift, you are making an impact in the community! Gifts that make an impact!
Mid-year I met a lady who I am so impressed with, Stacia Guzzo from Handcrafted Honeybee. She has an incredible heart for young girls and impacting them in making smart choices. She’s using an interest in skin care to teach girls to think creatively and analytically. One of the areas we feel strongly about supporting is to help stop the rise of Human Trafficking. Did you know 45+Million people globally are trapped in slavery today? That’s absurd for the age and world we live in!
Stacia makes and sells a kit where girls can make lip balms in a fun but educational way, improving and honing thinking skills (AND this kit received the 2016 Creative Child Award for Kids Product of the Year: Educational Kits!). We think this kit makes a perfect fit to pair with our desire to provide ways to share in stopping the trafficking of young girls. Stacia allows us to purchase her kits wholesale and we’ve committed to donating every bit of proceeds from this kit as one more small way of giving back. By forwarding these proceeds to organizations like International Justice Mission, who is proactively impacting human trafficking from going in undercover to rescue people from slavery to attorneys working with local government, staying in the area until prosecutions are fully made, we can feel certain that our small way of giving back is having a larger impact. Gifts that make an impact!
You too can feel good about having a large impact just by doing something that you already do on a regular basis! With a major gift-giving season upon us, you have the opportunity to purchase a gift for a friend or loved one that has an even greater impact than realized! While giving them a gift that will challenge the mind as well as delight the senses, you are also helping in the effort to stop Human Trafficking!
So whether you are purchasing an item for yourself, or purchasing a gift for another, you can feel good about your every day use of these item making a big difference in the lives of those that can not help themselves! You are giving gifts that make an impact!
If you’d like to see some of the places that you’ve helped us share the soap with this past year, you can see that here.
Thank you for making giving MORE than just about #givingTuesday. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to have a day to focus on giving when so many days in a row it seems the world is focused on materialism. But we’re so very thankful that you have helped us to make giving or sharing the focus the WHOLE year through, thru Sharing the Soap! Thank you for continuing to give gifts that make an impact!
Many blessings to you and yours!
